What Is an FPC? Flexible Printed Circuit Basics

An FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) is a circuit built on a thin, flexible insulating film instead of a rigid board, so it can bend and fit into tight or moving parts of a product. This guide explains the structure, the main types, how an FPC differs from a PCB and an FFC, how it is manufactured, and what to send when you request a quotation.

FPC, flex circuit, flexible PCB: the same product

Different teams use different names for the same class of product:

  • FPC - Flexible Printed Circuit, the common international term
  • Flexible PCB / flex circuit / flexible printed circuit board - descriptive alternatives
  • Rigid-flex - a separate structure that combines rigid and flexible sections

How an FPC is built

A typical flexible circuit is made up of these elements; the exact stack-up adds or removes layers:

  • Base film - usually polyimide (PI), sometimes PET, setting temperature resistance and flexibility
  • Copper foil - rolled annealed copper is generally preferred where repeated bending is required
  • Coverlay - protects the traces and opens windows over pads
  • Stiffener - PI, FR4 or stainless steel bonded locally at connectors and component areas
  • Surface finish - ENIG, OSP or immersion silver, for solderability and oxidation resistance
  • Gold fingers or connectors - the interface to the rest of the product

Main types of FPC

Classified by layer count and structure:

  • Single-sided FPC - one copper layer, simplest process, suited to straightforward connections
  • Double-sided FPC - copper on both sides with plated through-holes, higher routing density
  • Multilayer FPC - three or more layers built with multiple lamination cycles
  • Rigid-flex - rigid and flexible sections laminated into one part

FPC vs PCB

Both carry circuits, but they differ in material, form and the role they play in a product:

  • Base material: PCB uses rigid laminate such as FR4; FPC uses flexible PI/PET film
  • Form: a PCB is flat and rigid; an FPC can bend, fold and route in three dimensions
  • Role: the PCB usually carries structural support and main circuitry; the FPC connects within tight or moving areas
  • Assembly: an FPC is normally supported on a carrier or fixture during SMT
  • Cost: at low volume an FPC carries higher setup cost; at higher volume the gap narrows

FPC vs FFC

An FFC (flexible flat cable) is a flat cable made of parallel conductors laminated between insulating films - simpler in construction than an FPC. An FPC is etched, so it can carry finer traces, more complex routing and mounted components. Where shielding, controlled impedance or component assembly is required, an FPC is usually the choice.

How an FPC is manufactured

For a typical double-sided FPC the sequence runs as follows; details vary by factory and construction:

  • Material cutting
  • Drilling or laser via formation
  • Imaging and etching
  • Lamination of the layer stack
  • Coverlay lamination and window opening
  • Surface finish
  • Profiling by punch or laser
  • Electrical test and visual inspection
  • Packing and shipping

Where FPCs are used

FPCs are chosen where space is tight or part of the assembly has to move:

  • Consumer electronics - display, camera module and battery connections
  • Wearables - internal connections in watches and earbuds
  • Automotive - sensors, lighting and battery-management connections
  • Medical devices - portable monitors and probe connections
  • Industrial control - robot joints, servo and sensor wiring

What to send for an FPC quotation

To assess manufacturability and quote accurately, provide:

  • Gerber and drill files
  • Layer count and stack-up
  • Base material and copper weight
  • Surface finish
  • Stiffener material and position
  • Bend area and bend requirement
  • Quantity (prototype or volume) and target delivery

Frequently Asked Questions

What does FPC stand for?
FPC stands for Flexible Printed Circuit - a printed circuit built on a flexible insulating film so that it can bend and fit into tight or moving parts of a product.
Is an FPC the same as a flexible PCB?
Yes. Flex PCB, flexible circuit and FPC describe the same class of product; the terms differ mainly by region and by team habit.
What is the difference between an FPC and a PCB?
The base material and form. A PCB uses rigid laminate and stays flat, while an FPC uses a flexible film and can bend. The PCB usually provides structure and main circuitry; the FPC connects within tight or moving areas.
How many times can an FPC bend?
It depends on the stack-up, copper weight, coverlay, bend radius and whether the bend is dynamic or static. There is no single answer - specify the bend area and minimum radius so the fabricator can evaluate the design.
Single-sided or double-sided FPC?
Single-sided suits simple routing with one copper layer; double-sided is used where routing density requires both sides to interconnect. The drawing and available space decide.
When is a multilayer FPC needed?
When routing density, shielding or a complex stack-up requires more layers. Each additional lamination adds process steps, so an engineering review before the design is fixed is worthwhile.
How does rigid-flex relate to FPC?
Rigid-flex laminates rigid PCB sections and flexible FPC sections into one part, for areas that need structural support plus a bend.
What is needed for an FPC prototype quote?
Gerber and drill files, layer count and stack-up, base material and copper weight, surface finish, stiffener and bend requirements, quantity and target delivery.
