Prototype Process
A typical flow:
- Submit Gerber, drill and requirements
- Engineering review and quotation
- Sample fabrication with electrical/visual check
- Shipping and validation feedback
Details to Provide
Layer count, board thickness, laminate (e.g. FR4), copper weight, surface finish, quantity, whether SMT is needed, and target delivery.
What Engineering Review Confirms
Before material is committed, the submitted data is checked and anything unclear is raised with you first:
- Stack-up and layer count feasibility
- Trace width, spacing, drill sizes and outline requirements
- Panelisation and material usage
- Laminate and surface finish selection
- Whether impedance control or other special requirements apply
From Prototype to Volume
The construction and process confirmed on the sample become the reference for volume production, and the file revision is re-checked before the volume run starts so that a newer drawing does not slip in unnoticed. If the prototypes are to be assembled, SMT can be evaluated at the same time as the bare board.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What files are needed for a PCB prototype?
- Gerber and drill files as a minimum. Add a stack-up drawing and technical requirements if impedance control, a special construction, panelisation or cosmetic requirements apply - a complete data set avoids a round of clarification.
- How long does a PCB prototype take?
- It depends on layer count, laminate, process and quantity, and special processes differ substantially from standard ones. A written delivery date is confirmed after engineering review rather than quoted up front.
- Can you build multilayer prototypes?
- Layer count is assessed against your drawing. Send the stack-up and requirements and our engineers will confirm whether the construction can be produced and which process requirements follow.
- Will the prototype and the volume boards match?
- The construction and process confirmed on the sample are used as the reference for volume production, and the file revision is re-checked before the volume run to avoid differences caused by mixed revisions.
- Can prototypes be assembled with SMT?
- Yes - tell us at RFQ stage that SMT is required so the bare board and the assembly can be quoted together.
